“The 4th Assembly of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, which was inaugurated in June 2011, having completed four years, hereby stands dissolved,” the Speaker, Hon. Kunbowei Benson said, tears in his eyes. A number of other legislators also got emotional and cried.

The motion for the dissolution of the Fourth Assembly, which happened about 1.30pm after a valedictory sitting of the House in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, was moved by the Leader of the House, Mr. Peter Akpe, representing Sagbama Constituency 1 and seconded by Mrs. Agatha Goma, Ekeremor 1, an out-going lawmaker.

During the dissolution of the last Assembly and inauguration of the 5th Assembly, Speaker Benson went on memory lane as he recounted the successes of the Fourth Assembly under his leadership which he claimed passed 50 bills into law in the past four years.

He said during the period, the House received 60 bills comprising 49 executive bills, one private bill and others, out of which two bills were withdrawn.

Benson said in the past years, 40 motions were passed and resolutions forwarded to the executive arm.

He added that the House enjoyed a robust relationship, mutual respect with the key principal officers and a sense of common purpose with all the arms of government.

The Speaker lauded Governor Seriake Dickson for his sterling leadership qualities and deep understanding of the legislative process which, he said, facilitated their task  as lawmakers.
