Australia Snake Warning After Fatal Attack

Tourists and locals are being warned to stay alert as snakes increasingly venture into built up areas of Australia.

Hot, dry conditions are reducing the amount of prey on the ground and the hungry, thirsty reptiles are heading into the suburbs of Queensland in search of food.

On Sunday two people were bitten with one victim dying from the attack.

Debbie Ritchie was driving home from work in Cairns when she was nipped by an eastern brown snake hiding in the footwell of her car.

“I felt something brush over my legs,” the mother of four told the Courier Mail website.

“My daughter’s cat sometimes gets into the car, but when I looked down it was no cat, it was this brown snake slithering about.

“It made me swerve off the road and leap out. I’m terrified of snakes. No way was I getting back in the car.”

Ms Richie was treated in hospital, but a 62-year-old grandfather bitten on the hand by either a taipan or an eastern brown snake as he walked through grass at his Bluewater property died from the attack.
