The AUTHORITY Newspapers, published by Authority Media and Publications Limited, would go beyond the Nigerian elite to focus on ordinary Nigerians who are largely unreported, the company's Managing Director, Madu Onuorah has said.
Onuorah, who briefed journalists in Abuja on Sunday on the formal rollout of the Newspaper, said the publication believes in one Nigeria that is built on truth and justice.
He explained that last "Thursday, October 15, The Authority Newspapers proudly took its place among other publications on newsstands across the country and had, starting from that day, published in three titles - The AUTHORITY Daily, The AUTHORITY on Saturday and The AUTHORITY on Sunday.
"The AUTHORITY is a national newspaper with its head office in Abuja and regional offices in different parts of the country. Published by Authority Media and Publications Limited, it prides itself as a seeker after truth and justice.
"In other words, The AUTHORITY believes in one Nigeria built on justice and truth. It shall work to protect the nation's democracy and democratic principles, propagate good governance and rule of law whilst pursuing quality and excellence in the conduct of its affairs.
"In core journalism practice, The AUTHORITY shall report the voiceless, those people and sections of our society that are grossly under-reported by the mainstream media. That is to say that the paper shall be all things to all peoples, as the interests of all groups shall be protected in the newspaper".
He stated further that the newspaper would "focus on areas that are not well reported. For example, in the North-Central we intend to report not only the big men of the North-Central but there are other men and women who are working daily to make a difference. They have no voice in the present system.
"We will report about their activities, things that affect them, and the way they see governance. It is not just about the big men and what they do. We will go beyond the big men and report the activities of the men and women who in their daily duties are actually the people who make Nigeria work. And that is what we mean by giving voice to the voiceless".
While expressing optimism on the survival of the newspaper, he stressed that "the issue of the survival of a newspaper is dependent on the business model of the newspaper. For us here, we believe that this newspaper will not be a success if it is not successful as a business".
Onuorah was accompanied at the briefing by the Executive Directors in charge of Publications and Business Development, Joe Nwankwo and Chucks Akunna, respectively, as well as Director, Legal Services, Barr Afam Iluonoh.
