A total of 254 suspects involved in transnational telecom swindles were sent back to China from Indonesia and Cambodia on Tuesday morning.
The suspects are involved in over 4,000 cases of telecom fraud in over 20 provincial areas in both Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.
Up to 282 police officers were sent to Indonesia and Cambodia on four charter flights, respectively from Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Guangzhou, on Monday night, to escort the suspects.
This marks the first victory of China’s nationwide crackdown on telecom crimes, according to The People’s Daily. Hiding behind the modern technologies, swindlers often sent false messages or made false calls to the victims, asking them to transfer money to a certain account number.
As telecom fraud is becoming increasingly rampant in recent years, China has adopted tough measures against the crimes. This June, a joint system was established, concentrating the efforts of 23 departments on the crackdown of the crime. In 2014 alone, China cracked more than 6 million telecom fraud cases, busting over 3,100 criminal gangs and arresting over 20,000 suspects.
The 254 suspects extradited this time are among the 392 people caught during the two major arrest operations in Indonesia and Cambodia in October. According to China’s Ministry of Public Security, the suspects were generally young, unemployed people, who were recruited by criminal gangs to Southeast Asian countries under the guise of high salaries and an overseas work experience.
