Respite came for motorists in Nnewi and its environs in Anambra State on Tuesday, when the filling stations of Capital Oil and Gas Ltd, owned by Chief Ifeanyi Ubah, dispensed Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol at the official price of N87 per litre.
Most filling stations in the area sell fuel for between N130 and N200 per litre.
The news of the apparent "crash" in the price of the scarce product spread round the town like a wild fire which led to long queues in the filling stations.
A commercial motorcyclist, Mr Peter Edet, commended the gesture of Ubah, who, he noted, is always there for ordinary Nigerians.
Edet said that the greatest thing that would happen to Anambra is for Ubah, who is also the Publisher of The AUTHORITY Newspapers, to become the governor of the state.
The former Chairman of Nsuko-Ora Nnewi, Chief Charles Agu-Onyeka, who was at one of the filling stations to buy fuel, described Ubah as a man with milk of human kindness flowing in his vein.
Agu-Onyeka said that whenever a situation threatens the happiness of the people, Ubah always act promptly to bring succour to them.
He recalled that about two years ago, the oil magnate gave motorists and commercial motorcyclists free fuel every Monday until the situation became normal.
"When he was giving fuel and kerosene to the people free two years ago, it was erroneously construed to mean politics but for me, any politics that will alleviate the suffering of the people should be encouraged," Agu Onyeka said.
He thanked Ubah for rescuing his kinsmen from exploiters who capitalise on the fuel crisis to charge exorbitant rates.
At the time of filing this report, other marketers who had threatened to oppose Ubah's action hurriedly adjusted their pump price to less than N150 per litre of petrol.
