Why We Hired Atiku, Arase, Daura, Others' Relatives - CBN

Folowing the outrage which greeted the media report of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s employment scheme where notable Nigerians were allegedly  favoured without recourse for due process, the CBN has come out to defend its requirements exercise stating that in the past two years, it’s recruitments have been  “targeted”
A publication by Daily Trust on Wednesday had exposed the employment racketeering which saw CBN recruit 909 staff between June 2014 and February in 2005 without recourse to due process.
Also, Social media is presently agog with news that former vice-president Atiku Abubakar and
Inspecting general of police, Solomon Arase had their relatives employed without adherence to the federal character principle. President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew was also alleged to have benefited from the secret recruitment by CBN.
Mr. Isaac Okorafor, CBN’s acting Director of Corporate Communications had in a chat disclosed to Premium Times that it was not mandatory on it to advertise openings within the bank on pages of newspapers insisting that the exercise was in order.
“In the last two years, we have had cause to recruit specialists, and what the law says is that if we are going for that kind of recruitment we should apply for waiver, so that we can do targeted recruitment,” Okoroafor said.
He said the bank obtained waiver from the Federal Character Commission.
“The other issue is that there are states that are not well represented (in the CBN), and in this case we focus on those states to recruits people of certain classes that we used to cover the shortfall in those states.
He however played down allegations that some highly placed Nigerians were favoured in the process.
“Is there any qualified Nigerian who does not have the right to work in the CBN?” he asked.

The CBN’s justification has not gone down well with a majority of the population, who insist that the leadership of the apex bank used the appointments to curry favours from politicians.
